What is Local Government Reorganisation?
The Government is planning some big changes to how councils in county areas work by changing the structure of local councils. The plans were launched by Central Government through a ‘White Paper for Devolution’ and can be found on the gov.uk website. Fundamentally there are two major parts to the White Paper; the first is the introduction of Strategic Authorities, which could include Mayoral Combined Authorities, like the West Midlands Combined Authority. The second is the introduction of new Unitary Councils that will replace existing two-tier areas, including Staffordshire. Right now, Staffordshire has 10 councils across two levels – District and County, who all run a range of different services for their residents. The plan is to replace these 10 councils with fewer larger councils, called “Unitary Councils,” that would encompass all the existing services run across the current two levels of councils.
Various options are currently being explored by the councils across Staffordshire and Government have asked councils to submit plans for Staffordshire by November 2025. It is planned that the new unitary Council/s for Staffordshire will be introduced formally from April 2028.
Councillor Kath Perry MBE, Leader of South Staffordshire District Council, says “My priority will always be to ensure that our residents receive the best possible services, delivered as close to our communities as possible. We are working closely with other council leaders to make sure any changes are good for local people. We want to keep services close to communities and protect what makes South Staffordshire special.”
